Have you ever wanted to just get up and go to California? It seems like a far fetched idea, however; for those adventurous ones who are interested in taking the scenic route, it is only a bus ride away.

A little over 6 months ago, I was determined to go visit L.A. for my first time. I was looking everywhere online for the cheapest last minute flights but they were still pretty pricey. I began looking into other options and that’s when I came across a travelers site where they have mapped out the bus route right from Union Station in Toronto, Ontario all the way to Cali.

This is a great option for someone who is looking for an adventure. The trip will cost you $299C and take 3 days one-way. You can find last minute round trips that are slightly cheaper and way more time efficient, I would suggest this route for those that are looking for the experience over everything.

So whether you’ve packed your bags and plan on being the next big Hollywood star or you’re just in for a thrill, follow the guide below:

  1. Take Amtrak/Via “Maple Leaf” from Toronto (Union Station) to Buffalo (you could also choose Rochester, Syracuse, Utica, or Schenectady, if you would rather sight-see somewhere else)
  2. Catch the “Lake Shore Limited” west to Chicago, NY.
  3. Transfer to “Southwest Chief” to Kingman AZ.
  4. Transfer immediately to thruway bus to Las Vegas, NV.
  5. Once you’re in Las Vegas, there are multiple bus lines you can take to various areas of California, such as Los Angeles or San Francisco
Depart Toronto, ON 8:30 am $62
Arrive Buffalo, NY 1:25 pm (or stay on)
Depart Buffalo, NY 11:59 pm $69
Arrive Chicago, NY 9:45 am +1
Depart Chicago, NY 3:15 pm $139.41
Arrive Kingman, AZ 11:46 pm +1
Depart Kingman, AZ 11:50 pm (check) $28.59
Arrive Las Vegas, NV 3:10 am +1 $299

*Note: The “Maple Leaf” bus from Union departs once every day at 8:30 am. You can pay for your tickets either by phone or you can pay for them at the Toronto ticket office, they have an Amtrak computer on their counter next to the via computers, and they can issue all of your tickets for your entire trip, they accept both C$ or US$.
